Chewing your food for longer has many benefits

Following on from yesterday’s tip on eating slower, chewing your food is a useful technique that can attribute to doing this, which also comes with other health benefits.

 Remond et al 2007 compared the influence of chewing efficiency in elderly patients on protein synthesis. Those who had their own teeth had better chewing efficiency than patients with complete dentures, and this enhanced whole-body protein synthesis.

 Chewing properly increases the surface area of food by breaking it down into smaller particles. This makes food more easily digested and nutrients can be absorbed better by the intestines.

 Reducing the size of food particles improves digestion and reduces the risk of bloating, heartburn and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

 Possibly the best response to eating slower and chewing your food for longer, if that you get to taste your food, enjoy the flavours and appreciate your meal. This promotes a psychological well-being and healthy relationship with food.
