Eat Smart To Prevent Over-Eating

Nutrition Advent Calendar – Day 7

Making smarter food choices to prevent excess weight gain this Christmas

‘Here’s another blog saying what I shouldn’t eat at Christmas’…
Wait, this is definitely not one of those. I never tell ANYBODY what they CAN NOT eat. Unless they are allergic of course.

Instead, this is to simply recommend a strategy that prioritises healthier food choices FIRST, then you can enjoy all the festive treats you want.

By eating these foods first, not only does is ensure you’re actually getting some quality nutrition into your body, but it can also help you to eat less overall by manipulating your hunger hormones, ghrelin and leptin, to make you feel fuller. It may also encourage you to make better food choices. If you are conscious of what you’re eating and want to ‘be good’ this Christmas, do this and listen to your body, as it will tell you when you’re full!

So what foods does this include?

High protein (lean meat, fish, eggs, dairy)
 Fibrous vegetables & salad items
Slow releasing carbohydrates (wholegrains, potatoes with skins)

Take home messages:
Focus on nutrient-dense, low energy foods first before tucking into the calorific treats. Stay hydrated (see previous posts) and listen to your body, don’t just eat for the sake of it. Eat smart but enjoy your food and dance your socks off!
